Why I go to the chiropractor when I'm not in pain

One of the questions I get most often, usually with a slightly puzzled look: "But you're not in pain, so why are you going to the chiropractor?"

And every time, I smile. Because that question reveals exactly the misconception I want to talk about today. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Most people think chiropractic is something you do when your back gives out. When you can't get out of bed. When the pain is unbearable. And yes, chiropractic can absolutely be helpful in those moments. But waiting until you're in crisis to take care of your spine is a bit like only brushing your teeth when they start hurting.

By that point, things tend to be more complex to address.

Pain is actually a very late signal ๐Ÿ“ข

Your spine can have mechanical dysfunction for months or even years before you feel anything. The body is incredibly adaptable. It compensates, shifts load, finds workarounds. It only starts sending pain signals when it has genuinely run out of easier options.

This is why patients sometimes come in with imaging showing significant disc changes and say they had "no idea" anything was wrong. The body was quietly adapting the whole time.

Waiting for pain to act is waiting for the check engine light before you service your car. By then, you're often looking at a more involved process. ๐Ÿš—

Preventive chiropractic means coming in before that light comes on. Regular check-ups that support the spine and nervous system so small dysfunctions don't quietly compound over time.

Why the spine matters beyond just your back

Your spine isn't just structural. It houses and protects the spinal cord, the main communication pathway between your brain and your body. Every organ, muscle, and tissue is connected to it through the nervous system.

Brain Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacrum Heart / Lungs Digestive system Liver / Kidneys Hips / Legs Pelvic organs Shoulders / Arms Immune system Adrenal glands Sciatic nerve Reproductive system The spine as a communication pathway between brain and body

When there is mechanical interference on that pathway, the effects can show up in unexpected ways. Not just back pain, but headaches, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or feeling generally "off." As I explain in my post on how to support your nervous system at home, the connection between spinal function and how your whole body feels is closer than most people realise.

What patients often notice ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Patients who shift to regular preventive care often share things like:

  • "I'm sleeping so much better"
  • "I feel less reactive to stress"
  • "I have more energy in the afternoons"
  • "My headaches have reduced significantly"

These kinds of responses are consistent with what the research suggests may happen when the nervous system is functioning with less mechanical load. A review of chiropractic adjustments in people with no symptoms at all found measurable changes in nervous system function and body awareness after regular care. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

How often? At least once a month

My recommendation for everyone in preventive or maintenance care is a minimum of once a month.

The brain adapts through repetition, not marathon sessions. Five minutes of Spanish every day beats an intensive weekend by a mile, and the body works the same way. That's neuroplasticity. Monthly adjustments give the nervous system the consistent input it needs to maintain function between visits.

A randomised controlled trial found that patients who continued with regular spinal care after their symptoms resolved had significantly better long-term outcomes than those who stopped once they felt well. ๐Ÿ“Š

Is it worth the cost? ๐Ÿ’ก

A fair question. The research suggests that preventive care tends to reduce the need for more intensive reactive care over time. I wrote a full breakdown of costs in my post on how much chiropractic costs in Barcelona.

Where do you start?

If you've already completed a care plan and your spine is in a good place, monthly maintenance is the next step.

If you've never seen a chiropractor before, we start with a full assessment. A first consultation is always an evaluation, not a commitment. You can read exactly what that involves in my post on what actually happens at your first chiropractic appointment.

Not sure if you even need chiropractic? My guide on the signs your body is asking for help is a good place to start. And if you're wondering how chiropractic compares to osteopathy or physiotherapy, I broke that down here.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in pain to see a chiropractor?

Not at all. Preventive care is about supporting spinal and nervous system function before problems compound. Some of the most valuable work happens before pain appears.

How often should I come in for maintenance care?

My recommendation is a minimum of once a month. That's the frequency at which the nervous system receives consistent enough input to support function between visits.

Is regular chiropractic care safe long term?

Yes. Chiropractic is one of the most researched manual therapies available. Preventive adjustments are gentle and targeted. I always reassess at each visit so care stays appropriate for where you are right now.

What is the difference between a treatment plan and maintenance care?

A treatment plan addresses a specific problem, usually with more frequent sessions over a defined period. Maintenance care is what comes after, once things are functioning well and the goal is to keep them that way with monthly visits.

You don't wait until your teeth hurt to see a dentist. You don't wait until your car breaks down to service it. Your spine deserves the same logic. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿš—๐Ÿง
